International ASSUMPTION READINGS
Memory and Hope:
Horizons and Paths of Finding Meaning
Holy Assumption Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary
 National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”

The Assumption Readings conference takes place in the Holy Assumption Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra from the 27th to the 30th of September 2009. The topic is: “Memory and Hope: Horizons and Paths of Finding Meaning.”

Memory is one of the key terms of the Old Testament and hope – of the New: «…we are saved by hope» (Rom. 8:24). Following Apostle Paul (1 Tim. 1:1, Col. 1:26), Ignatius of Antioch often refers to Christ as our hope (Eph. 21, Phil. 11, Magn. 11).
St. Clement of Alexandria writes so wonderfully: «For in reality the blood of faith is hope, in which faith is held as by a vital principle. And when hope expires, it is as if blood flowed forth; and the vitality of faith is destroyed» (The Paedagogus). In the eschatological perspective, the tension between inviolable Tradition and constant renewal forms the double rhythm of the Church. Liturgical memory includes the presence of God’s Kingdom here and now.
Participants of the seminars are invited to present on the following topics:
·        Memory and hope as the quest of continuity
·        Memory and hope in the Holy Scripture and the Holy Tradition
·        Liturgical memory and eschatology in the life of the Church
·        The Mother of God as the “Hope of the hopeless”
·        Memory and hope as values in the contemporary world
·        The collisions of memory and hope in family life and education
·        The theology of Hope
